Willie the Mustang is successfully trained and rehabilitated!
This is the story of a 15 year old, previously wild mustang named "Willie" and the journey of his transformation from extreme neglect and unresolvable training issues (including a chronic bolting issue) to a willing partner!
You can read a series of blogs that tell the story of Willie's training here: www.mustangmaddy.com/lesson-1-slow-is-fast-fast-is-slow/

How to Let Your Horse Say "No" Without Ruining Your Training

Yes, I had been criticized pretty harshly from horse folks when I welcomed the "no", it hurt my heart, I wanted to hide... But when I was with the horses, our relationship was far greater than that of those horse folks. I remain faithful & confident within our connection. The quality is so great, I will take the criticism & laughter all day...I won't sacrifice these beautiful beings for human praise ❤

Maddy,I thank you so much for sharing all this profound knowledge with us.I actually still find myself getting too defensive when a horse says no,but I`m aware and observing myself and being aware that it has nothing to do with the horse but is more linked to experiences I had with humans.Horses never put me into freeze but humans do sometimes, which I absolutely hate and then I find it hard to have compassion towards myself. These things go so deep and our horses help us to shine a light on all the dark spots, helping us to be more aware about ourself and others.Having watched "Taming Wild" I know it`s vital to change our perspective about a horse saying no and as soon as there are people around I find it even harder, because I`m living in Germany, were folks are in some sort of a love affair with judging....but I guess I`m gonna just pause, exhale, and continue do what I believe is best for the horse and my relationship. Thanks again Maddy for being so generous and inspiring!!!

It is not just girls you’re making a difference with. I have been someone who has lost myself through horses and training, I didn’t know myself, I was unhappy with myself. I gave up for years and got out of horses. I have an amazing husband and family but I have always struggled with my own emotions and who I am through life. I am not a member yet but when I found your videos I instantly felt like I could become the horseman that I’ve always wanted and at one point was becoming, but had that stripped away from me through certain other training programs. I need your program not only for my horses but for myself. This episode has really resonated with me and sucked the emotions right out of me erupting to the surface this evening. Thank you! 🌸✨🩵

I’ve worked for trainers while being their assistant who not only had me attempt to overpower and not allow the horse to say no, but also would not allow myself to say no, which has now resulted in myself having ptsd in certain situations. I am glad I have found you and your program and will be patient to get signed up! I need this not only for my horses but mainly for myself even!

Another amazing video! I so appreciate you explaining how negative reinforcement can cause resentment. I’ve always felt the same way. And that they are simply choosing the lesser of two evils. I like positive reinforcement better, though with both food motivation and “avoidance” motivation I don’t feel the “connection” is real. It’s like if you had a friend who gave you $50 every time you saw them. You might be motivated to see them due to the money but it doesn’t mean the friendship is authentic. I wonder if there is a third way to motivate horses to learn and connect. Until I discover what it is I will be using food, rubs, and negative (I like the word passive better) reinforcement. Thanks for all that you do Maddy!

This video series literally changed my life. I signed up for the HCA course last year & it’s changed everything! I have a much Better relationship with my mare/the pushiness is a thing of the past/ we’re doing things I never thought possible / & the level of trust & fun we’re having is simply unmatched. To come out of my vulnerability shell; The thing that I somehow tell myself daily & that holds me back is that I’ll never do enough, be enough,, be educated enough, work hard enough, or be valued enough to be acceptable to others. There. I did it- those are my big fears! I hope this helps at least one person..bless you Maddy for your encouragement & your wisdom. You’re a “young elder”!

I love making crafts! I love camping and basically anything to do with being out in nature. I could probably write a book on all the things I love to do as play. Oh yeah I almost forgot!! Your upcoming training Academy!! This comes from an ole gal that hated school that spent most of the day daydreaming about my horses and couldn’t wait to get out of school! Now I feel like a sponge and I can’t get enough!! Finally living my dream (only took me 60 years!!)

I'm also stuck with catching my horse in the pasture and haltering. As soon he sees me coming or I get anywhere near him, he runs or hides behind other horses and then runs away. Sometimes he''ll let me get close but as soon as I get the halter near him or touch his head/neck, he runs so I have to break this down more and that's what I need to learn. How do I get him to want to come to me willingly?

As a combat veteran who is working through some substantial challenges as a result of those experiences, your humanity and your approach to working with vulnerable and traumatized beings through kindness and understanding is highly applicable to my and others path forward.. These horses and your methods ask for truth, beauty, and kindness which is what many of us need in order to recover our balance . A book that has been a touchstone for me and which is very apropos to your discussion in this video is Man’s Search for Meaning, by Viktor Frankl, a holocaust survivor and prominent psychologist.
